Notes: "The Office of Fair Trading plays a key role in protecting the economic welfare of consumers, and in enforcing United Kingdom competition policy."  See especially the online "Fair Trading" magazine

3.   Trading Standards Central

Notes: "A one-stop shop for consumer protection information in the UK. The site is supported and maintained by ITSA, the Institute of Trading Standards Administration."   (You can use this site to locate your local Trading Standards office.)

4.   Watchdog (BBC Television - Consumer Program)

Notes: Online version of the TV program.   Details of all the main stories broadcast.

5.   Electricity and Gas Consumers Council

Notes: An independent consumer champion, committed to improving the services provided to all gas and electricity customers

7.   Citizens Advice Bureau

Notes: The national network of Citizens Advice Bureaux can offer advice and assistance on a wide rage of topics.  Use this website to find online guidance of a general nature or, for more specific advice, to locate a CAB office in your area. 

8.  Stop Receiving Junk Mail

Notes: Put your postal address on the official register of people who do not want to receive unsolicited marketing mailshots.   Contact the Mailing Preference Service.  (Please note that this registration will NOT prevent receipt of junk e-mail)

9.  Stop Receiving Junk Telephone Calls

Notes: Put your telephone number on the official register of people who do not want to receive unsolicited telephone calls.   Contact the Telephone Preference Service.

10.  Stop Receiving Junk Faxes

Notes: Put your fax number on the official register of people who do not want to receive unsolicited fax communications. Contact the Facsimile Preference Service.

11.  Opt Out of Receiving Junk E-mails

Notes: If you want to stop companies sending you unwanted e-mail (SPAM), you can register with the Direct Marketing Association's e-mail preference service.  Please note that this service is run by the US branch of the Direct Marketing Association, so any personal data won't be protected by UK laws.
