Like writers, musicians, painters, movie-makers and other 'artists',
photographers have protected rights of ownership in the images they create. These
rights protect photographers from having their intellectual property stolen and used
without their permission. Without that protection, photographers would have great
difficulty in making a living, and image libraries probably would not exist.
The duration of copyright in the United Kingdom is the life of the creator
plus 70 years and, because of an EU copyright directive, this is now the same in all
countries of the EU. Since 1998, with very minor differences, the same rule also
applies in the USA. The situation may be less than clear in certain other
countries but, in most, similar rules apply.
Because of the existence of copyright, you may not simply copy and
reproduce images you find in books, magazines, newspapers, picture library catalogues, or
online galleries. Unless images are specifically offered as being free and
without restriction, you must obtain permission before using them. Failure to do
this can put you in breach of copyright, for which legal penalties can be severe.
CMPL holds the copyright of all images shown on this site, and only CMPL
can give authority for their reproduction. Unlicensed use of theses images constitutes
breach of copyright and will normally attract substantial legal penalties.
Typically, these penalties will be at least twice the normal fee chargeable for use of the
image, and may be substantially higher.
Permission MUST therefore be obtained BEFORE any image owned by CMPL is
published in any way.
Pre-publication layouts ('comps') may include low-resolution images from
the CMPL website or from our offline catalogue without specific permission, as long as the
source of the image is acknowledged. To download low resolution images for layout
purposes, first gather the relevant images together in a virtual
lightbox, then register the lightbox by emailing it to yourself. (The lightbox
will remain available for up to 90 days) . Finally use the lightbox zip facility to download copies of the images to
your PC.
With the exception of some 'thumbnail' sized images, all images from
the CMPL website incorporate a visible watermark which includes our web address. In
no circumstances may this watermark be removed or obliterated. (Transparencies or high
resolution digital images supplied for publication do not, of course, incorporate a
visible watermark.)
