CMPL CMPL is a specialised picture library
dealing with the British countryside and the country way of life. Geographical
coverage is not limited to any particular part of the UK but our efforts are focused
principally on Shropshire, Herefordshire and the Welsh Borders.
As a picture library, CMPL is not basically concerned with selling images, but
rather with selling licenses for the limited use of images supplied from our
stock. Licensing stock images usually costs only a fraction of what it would
cost to commission a dedicated photo-shoot, and is not subject to limitations of the
weather or the seasons. (Photographing a snow-covered UK landscape in high summer is
not a practical proposition, whatever your budget!)
Stock images can be licensed for use in many different ways, ranging from publication
in a local newspaper or magazine to use in books, billboards, television, audiovisual
presentations and a host of other applications. Fees paid for the use of any of our images
are based on the manner in which the images are to be used, and the length of time for
which that usage is required. At no point do our clients own the images supplied by
us. They simply own a limited range of reproduction rights - usually for a limited
period of time.
Images supplied for a particular use may not, of course, be used for other purposes,
without our express permission. All uses must be discussed in advance with CMPL, and fees
must be agreed in writing, before images are published.
CMPL does not supply 'royalty-free' images - i.e. where a single fee covers virtually
unlimited use of the image for an unlimited period. As you may know, under the
'royalty free' scheme, the same images may be sold to many different clients and it is not
possible, therefore, to maintain a reliable central record of the way in which they are
used. This lack of exclusivity can sometimes lead to problems - for example when a
client finds that a competitor is using the same image in a directly competing situation.
CMPL adopts the more conservative 'rights managed' approach, keeping records of the
reproduction rights purchased by each client and, where possible, details of how each
image is used. These records can provide an important safeguard against
conflicting usage.
